Equipment Must Haves

When it comes down to getting that perfect photo, one of the most crucial aspects is the equipment you are using. It is possible to capture a good shot using just your phone (be sure to come back next week to learn all about iPhone photography), however, you definitely won't regret investing in a nice digital camera and some lenses if you're starting to get into photography.

My number one suggestion for a camera to start out with would be the Canon EOS 70D. It is an incredible camera that's pretty straightforward to use, and has a plethora of amazing qualities! This camera is a great choice for both beginners and more advanced photographers.

The camera body itself has so many cool features. It has a reversible screen with a fully articulated touchscreen display, a wide range of settings you can choose to shoot in, a built in flash option, an auto focus sensor, and an option to attach a separate detachable flash to the top of the camera body.

The Canon EOS 70D also comes with a groundbreaking built in wifi function. The camera can easily be connected to your iPhone through wifi to provide a much simpler way to download photos from your camera straight to your phone. All you have to do is select the photos you want on your phone and BOOM! They're downloaded within a few minutes. With many other cameras where this is not an option, you have to go through the hassle of connecting your camera to a computer, downloading the photos, and then sending them one by one to your phone.

This wifi function also acts as a remote for the camera. You can access "remote live view shooting mode" on the Canon Camera Connect application, in order to view your camera's subject matter through your phone and take photos from a distance. This is a new, innovative way to take self timer photos where you can actually see the final product as you're taking the photos. Here is an example of a self portrait I shot using this feature:

Aside from the camera body itself having so many awesome features that can be utilized to improve your photos, the lens you choose to use is just as important! The standard lens that the Canon EOS 70D comes with is typically an 18-55mm, however, it is completely detachable and can easily be switched out for a variety of other types of lenses.

When it comes to a camera lens, it can sometimes be beneficial to stray away from the typical Canon brand. Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina are a few of the third party manufacturers which have mounts that fit on Canon bodies.

The lens you use is entirely dependent on what subject matter you are shooting, and what you want the final product of your photos to look like. You can definitely get away with using the standard lens for most of your photos. However, over time it is definitely nice to add to your collection and have more options for lenses to use. If I were to suggest equipment for a perfect digital photography starting kit, I would recommend a Canon EOS 70D with the standard kit lens, a macro lens, and a zoom lens! These are the basics of my collection that I find myself gravitating towards the most.

Let me know in the comments what type of camera you have, or what is your favorite type of lens to shoot with! I'll catch you next week to discuss everything you need to know about iPhone photography.
