Are you interested in getting into photography, but you're not ready to drop a few hundred dollars on a nice camera and lenses? Well, then this is the post for you! Almost every American nowadays has a smartphone, and almost half of these people choose to use an Apple iPhone. You can take decent photos on any smartphone that you might have, however, this post is specifically targeted to iPhone users.

Here are my top 5 tips on how to capture the best photos from your iPhone, along with examples taken by me:

Keep it simple!

Try to have a distinct subject matter in your photo. You can achieve this by ensuring that your background is simple and not too busy, which is sure to make your subject stand out. This might mean that the majority of your photo is taken up by empty or negative space, which is totally fine! Remember - most of the time, less is more. Too many details can quickly distract the viewer, and make your photos overwhelming to look at.

Experiment with angles!

Most people don't even think twice before taking their photos from chest height, because it seems the most natural and easiest. However, trying out a different angle can elevate your photos and make them so much more interesting! Try shooting from a lower angle to give a unique perspective of the world, or take your photos from a bird's eye view. Both of these will give very different effects to your photos, but they can be much more interesting than the typical photo from chest height.

Sometimes, you have to be willing to go to extremes in order to get that perfect photo! Here's a picture of me laying on the ground in the middle of a park in order to capture a photo of my friend, along with the final product:

Don't be afraid to take a few steps closer!

When taking photos of an object that has really intricate details, getting closer to the subject will always pay off. Shooting from too far away might result in a boring photo where you cannot see the beautiful details of the object.

I would especially recommend this tip when it comes to nature photography! Anything with interesting details or texture always looks amazing in close up photos, such as tree bark, leaves, flowers, or water droplets. You'd be surprised how much detail your iPhone is capable of capturing if you just take a few steps closer!

Take LOTS of photos!

iPhones often come with way more storage than we could ever possibly need, so why not take advantage of this and fill up our camera galleries! It's never a bad idea to spam your camera and take lots of photos of the same subject from different angles and perspectives. You'll have lots of options to choose from later, and you're sure to have at least one perfect shot!

You can also take advantage of the "favorite" icon in your iPhone's camera roll post production. This will help you narrow your options down and decide which photos you like the best! Here are a couple examples from my camera roll:

Be Creative!

Don't be afraid to think outside the box and let your creative juices flow. Photography is such a unique and personal experience for everyone, so my biggest tip would just be to have fun, and to let your creativity take over! Experiment lots, and never shoot down ideas that you have. Trying something new can either result in an amazing photograph, or it can be a great learning experience!
