Top Five Types of Photography

When it comes to different genres of photography, the possibilities are truly endless! As long as you have some sort of device that is capable of taking photos, and something to take a photo of, you automatically have the ability to explore and play around with a wide variety of types of photography.

Some photographic categories are dependent on the subject matter used by the artist, whereas others are defined by certain techniques or skills.

Here is my list for the Top Five Types of Photography you should try out, along with examples for each one!

1. Portrait photography is arguably the most popular of all categories. There are many factors to be considered when shooting portraiture, including poses, angles, lighting, distance, and facial expressions. This encompasses red carpet and magazine photo shoots, as well as family photos, senior pictures, and even those photos you have your friends take of you to post on your Instagram.

2. Next up is Landscape and Nature Photography, which is my personal favorite! This is an ideal one to play around with if you enjoy traveling, although landscape photographs can be taken anywhere. They are traditionally horizontal photos, however, I would suggest taking a few vertically as well, in order to capture more of the sky, as well as any tall objects in your photo such as trees or mountains.

3. Food Photography is pretty self explanatory, and I'm sure that 99% of you are guilty of having taken a picture of your food at least once or twice. Lighting and angles are the main aspects you want to focus on when taking photos of your meal, coffee, or snack, and more can be done post processing to brighten the colors and make your food look more appealing.

4. Sports Photography might not be the best option for beginners, but it is certainly fun to try out once you've become more familiar with your camera! You will need to shoot with a fast shutter speed and a lens that allows you to zoom in a lot, in order to best capture the action. Sports photography is extremely rewarding when you get the perfect shot, and sometimes it can be pretty funny! I've captured some hilarious moments of people getting hit in the face during a basketball game, or getting a mouthful of dirt after being pushed over in soccer.

5. I had to include Macro Photography, as this is another one of my personal favorites. It is certainly most effective to use a macro lens which was designed specifically for this purpose, however, you can get away with using other lenses too. Macro photos are extreme close ups, usually with a nature related subject matter, such as small insects or flowers. This is a great way to capture the details of a small object in a very captivating way.

There you have it, my list of the Top Five Types of Photography! I hope you were inspired to go out and try some new techniques, or to shoot different, unique subject matter next time you play around with photography!
